Saw II

7 / 10

Saw II is as good as the first.  The violence steps up, the gore intensifies, and the killer’s methods of inflicting suffering upon his victims get more and more creative (for evermore, when I think ‘horror’, I will think scratching for a key in a pit of syringes).  But unlike many unplanned sequels, especially on the horror/thriller shelves, Saw II is not merely a long enough sequence of gratuitous violence and titty-scenes to attract but not impress fans of the original.  Perhaps the writers were already thinking of a trilogy and needed to keep their audience enthralled.  Or perhaps, hopefully, a quality product was actually more important to them than a fast turnaround sequel.  Whatever the cause, the twists in Saw II are just as exciting, if not more, than the first.  This is intelligent filmmaking and a worthy sequel, and I, at least, will be back for the third.

About Willy

Willy cried in Little Miss Sunshine and only pretends to like the Godfather movies. He celebrates Jackie Chan's birthday every year.
